Best actor, actress races tighten ahead of Oscars
Hollywood enjoys surprises on the movie industry's most prestigious night, and pundits think popular actor George Clooney and little-known French actress Marion Cotillard would be wise to start practicing their acceptance speeches. "There is no such thing as a shoo-in at the Oscars. Hollywood is a town of bull-headed, contrary-minded people," said Tom O'Neil, columnist for www.TheEnvelope.com. Day-Lewis, 50, an actor known for lengthy preparation, is well-liked by Academy voters. He won an Oscar playing a man who overcomes cerebral palsy in 1989's "My Left Foot," and has been nominated two other times for "In the Name of the Father" and "Gangs of New York". This awards season, he has earned numerous honors playing a sadistic, early 20th century oil prospector in dark drama "There Will Be Blood" -- only his fourth film in a decade.

Mitsubishi workers handed lifeline as car plant closes
More than 900 people will lose their jobs when Mitsubishi closes its doors in South Australia at the end of March. The decision follows years of losses for the company and poor sales of its 380 sedan, caused partly by a sharp rise in the Aussie dollar. Federal Industry Minister Kim Carr says Mitsubishi workers will receive a $50 million assistance package, to be funded by the state and federal governments and Mitsubishi. Senator Carr says the package will include up to $10 million for intensive assistance to workers and a $40 million fund to strengthen South Australia's manufacturing base. Mitsubishi says it also will work with government agencies to provide counselling, job seeking, retraining and other support services. The company's chief executive officer Rob McEniry says the decision to close the plant is "heartbreaking" but he believes the company has explored every possible option to keep it running.
A Short Introduction to Lindsay's New Maybe, Sorta, Kinda Boyfriend
It's always great when a big starlet like Lindsay Lohan is linked to a small-town boy. The local paper gets so excited, and we're able to learn more about him than from any tabloid. After being spotted leaving the Four Seasons with Linds in New York, Jeremy Greene quickly became her latest rumored suitor, and this is what we found out from his local Maine paper, the Morning Sentinel: He wears the hood of his jacket over his baseball hats. (Note to Jeremy: Please stop that.)Ali Lohan is hoping he makes a serious love connection with her big sis. During the interview with the paper, she texted him: "I asked her, and she said you're very handsome." Score! He's not sure he'll be able to save our Lohan, but he said, "I think I could probably be a good, positive person in her life."He would like his own reality show.
John Mayer's Supreme and Sweaty Workout
John Mayer worked up quite a sweat at his Santa Monica gym on Tuesday afternoon before Sushi dinner at Katsuya. We know he's quite the fitness buff (emphasis on the buff — heeellooo), but has been without a female workout partner over the last few months. Since I'm sure that's something he wants from the highly desired future Mrs. Mayer, may I suggest that he sticks with his rumored flame Cameron Diaz. She seems to have the sense of humor to go with the physical fitness, which has to be a plus. .
Gay matchmaking sites find a growing market
Growing up, Bethtina Woodridge heard all kinds of advice about dating, finding a husband and getting married. "You don't have those tips about meeting women," said Woodridge, 31. "How do I approach her, how do I know she is gay?" For Woodridge, finding that special someone turned out to be easier online. Several months after signing up for dating service Chemistry.com, Woodridge was matched with her partner, who was "incredibly honest and sincere, and she stole my heart." After online giant eHarmony made headlines last year by saying its psychological research is based exclusively on heterosexual relationships, a growing number of rival online matchmakers are using their algorithms to find same-sex love as well. "There are just not enough services for creating healthy relationships, and (it is) a major gap in the gay community," said matchmaker Patrick Perrine, founder of San Francisco-based Mypartner.com, which caters to "sophisticated, cultured and relationship-oriented gay men" and has more than 50,000 clients across the nation.
Road-Warrior Sharks Beat Slumping Red Wings, 3-2
I know it popped up somewhere, didn't know where," Setoguchi said. "The next thing I know it comes down on my stick and I put it in." The rookie wing, recalled Thursday from the minors, scored for the third time this season in his initial game after being called up. "Every time we bring him up, he's a little bit more of a professional," Wilson said. "Let's hope he doesn't have to go back down." Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said it was unfortunate the officials didn't stop the play when the puck cleared the glass. "It hit the net, rolled down the boards and rolled out in front," Babcock said. "When you look at the video, it seems real obvious." Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart, acquired from Los Angeles just before Tuesday's trading deadline, made his debut and provided the hard-hitting presence the Red Wings' depleted blue line needs.
Ray Harryhausen's monster gift to film
Most of his films are filled with stars you've never heard of, and at the time they didn't win awards. But in the Bay Area, the unofficial capital of the special effects industry, Harryhausen is still the most recognizable name in the business. He's treated like a rock star when he flies into town - during his most recent appearance, last Wednesday at the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael, Harryhausen received his first standing ovation of the evening before he even reached the stage. "I had no idea at the time that my films would be remembered like this," Harryhausen says during a phone interview late last week. He was scheduled to speak with The Chronicle after the show, but had to postpone when the line of autograph seekers snaked across the stage and all the way down the theater aisle.
Gingrich goes gaga over Barackamania
If the technology is not there, that means lighter cars. Studies have already shown lighter cars are leading to more deaths. Is he willing to take the responsibility for that? As for Fiscal, he wants to reverse the Bush tax cuts that fed this economy. He says end wasteful spending, but still proposes more spending. My a comments from #15 are based upon listening to him speak. He really does not say much. As I write this, I am hearing Hannity talk to someone about what Senator Obama has accomplished. I admit ignorance. Can you name one specific accomplishment? BF, not that I am happy about it, but I believe McCain will be the next president. Hopefully he will have a good guy for vice president, because I believe the VP could easily have to assume the duties. Senator Obama will fizzle. Next November, you can remind me if I am wrong.
Get ready for the sound of music
At the tender age of 14, Megan Crampsey and Emma Wyper, both pupils at St Luke's High School in Barrhead, would both consider themselves fairly experienced performers. Megan, who took up viola when she was in primary four, plays with a variety of quartets and orchestras, while drummer Emma loves performing samba, rock and blues numbers with her percussion group at school concerts and events. Nonetheless, they admit the thought of their forthcoming performance with their school choir at the Glasgow Music Festival, in just over a week, has them feeling a bit jittery. It will be the second time the group, formed by music teacher Mari Bett four years ago, will take part in the city's annual event for amateur musicians. But, says Megan, taking to the stage at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall - where they will perform a version of Happy Ending by Brit-winner Mika - is still more than enough to get the heart thumping.
