Deluxe singles travel

The same old images still adorn the walls and windows of your local travel office: Smiling nuclear families discovering Disney World and well-tanned, hand-clasped couples honeymooning on the white sand shores of a Caribbean paradise.

While families still go to Disney World and couples still honeymoon in the Bahamas, these images are increasingly anachronistic representations of the typical American traveler. Millions of people today travel with neither families nor mates, but alone—as unattached singles.

In the last decade, the number of single travelers has exploded to reach more than a quarter of the entire industry—a percentage that continues to rise along with divorce rates and the average marrying age. According to Connected: Solo Traveler's Network, a leading online singles travel community, one-third of the adult population is single and travels that way.

Azinger alters first two days of Ryder Cup format

Paul Azinger has already introduced sweeping changes to the U.S. Ryder Cup team selection process. Now he has altered the format of the tournament.

The U.S. captain announced Wednesday that the order of the team matches on the first and second days of the competition will be reversed, meaning there will be four foursomes (alternate shot) matches followed by four four-ball (best ball) matches. As usual, the Ryder Cup will conclude with 12 singles matches on Sunday.

In each of the past two Ryder Cups -- routs for the European team -- the four-ball format was used in the morning each day.

"I believe it was 1997, I think Seve (Ballesteros) changed it to best ball in the morning and alternate shot in the afternoon. I felt like the Americans had an edge in alternate shot and I think it's partly responsible for why Europe has gotten off to a pretty hot start," Azinger said at a news conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he is competing in this week's FBR Open.

Flo Rida - Ten Weeks On Top For Flo Ridas Low

Meanwhile, Sara Bareilles' Love Song jumps up from five to four, switching places on the new chart with Alicia Keys' No One. Rabbis get serious about matching up singles

The rise of interfaith marriage is a sensitive issue among American Jews, and now two powerful forces in the religion are teaming up to do something about it: rabbis and JDate, the top matchmaking Web site for Jewish singles.

For the first time in its 10-year history, the site is offering a bulk rate to rabbis who want to buy membership accounts for congregants. According to Gail Laguna, JDate's vice president of communications, singles who sign up through their congregation get a slight discount on the site's $149 six-month subscription fee.

"This is a way for us to break down the walls of the synagogue," said Rabbi Michael Cahana, of Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Ore.

The rabbis who negotiated the rate are also picking up the tab. Rabbi Donald Weber of Temple Rodeph Torah in Marlboro, N.J., has paid out of his own pocket for 24 six-month subscriptions.

Sania tamed by Venus after brave show

Melbourne, Jan 19 Sania Mirza put up a spirited fight against eighth-seeded American Venus Williams before crashing out in the third round of the women's singles event of the Australian Open here today.
Sania gave the former Wimbledon champion a run for her money before losing 7-6 (0) 6-4 in an intense battle which lasted over one-and-a-half hours.

In a gutsy performance, the 31-ranked Indian matched Venus shot for shot in the first set to drag it to a tie-breaker.

However, the tie-breaker proved to be a one-sided affair as Venus swept past the Indian to go one up.

The 21-year-old was mainly undone by the 30 (rpt 30) unforced errors, which spiked her chances.

The Indian ace committed as many as 16 unforced errors in the second set which tilted the game in the favour of the American.
