AOL Personals – Zogby Poll Probes American Views on Love and ...

Dulles, Va. and Utica, New York. More than 4 in 10 Americans (44%), including 50% in their 20s dont believe that they need to be married to validate the commitment of a long-term relationship, according to a survey from AOL Personals (http://personals.aol.com) and Zogby*. This is just one of the many findings from a new interactive survey of Americans age 20 to 69 that tackles how different generations view a wide range of relationship issues from love to soul mates, money and trust.

While many dont believe marriage is the ultimate symbol of commitment, there are significant differences among older and younger adults regarding how they view dating while nearly half of Americans said they would date someone who is not interested in a long-term relationship, older adults tend to be more open to dating without fixating on how long a relationship might last.

It's the metaphysics, stupid

As Obama points out often, this is a particularly American perspective. When the Founders wrote "We hold these truths to be self-evident," they were not only not self-evident; they weren't even true. Americans have gone a long way toward making them true because we've shown, time and again, that despite slavery and sexism and economic inequality, we believe they should be true.

If it's a message so catchy that it has now made the rounds of cyberspace as a star-studded video, it's also one with roots as deep as Immanuel Kant. The "Critique of Pure Reason" is not easy reading, but it makes some startling claims. Kant tells us that Plato's ideal of a perfectly just state was always dismissed as a utopian dream; but if everyone had worked to realize those ideals, they would be true today.

Commissioners shun plan for $7.1 million DSS building

County commissioners flatly rejected a planned Social Services facility that is $2.3 million over budget.

Salisbury architect Bill Burgin presented schematic plans to commissioners Thursday for the renovation and expansion project that would combine all Social Services offices at the Health Services Building on Faith Road.

The county hired Burgin to design the project, which includes renovating the existing mental health section of the building and adding new space.

Commissioners had agreed on a budget of $5.1 million for a total of 45,000 square feet of space. The county is in the process of borrowing the money for the project.

Commissioners were briefly speechless when Burgin unveiled the price tag — $7.1 million. The design features a two-story brick addition with a total of 61,000 square feet of new and renovated space.

Cinequest: on-screen mix of the unusual, interesting

Cinequest 18 runs from Feb. 27 through March 9 in San Jose and is a celebration of independent films. Watch this paper and www.ealasaid.com/cineblog/ for ongoing coverage of the films and events of the festival. Tickets and passes are available at www .cinequest.org or by calling 295-FEST (295-3378).

Here are reviews of Cinequest films that I have been able to catch so far:

"Suspension"

Screenings: March 7, 9:30 p.m. (Cam 12); March 8, 9:30 p.m. (Cam 12); March 9, 10:30 p.m. (Cam 12)

"Suspension" revolves around a man, Daniel, and a woman, Sarah, who lose their families in the same car accident. As Daniel recovers from his injuries, he rebuilds his son's video camera and discovers that it now possesses a strange ability: it can pause time, allowing its wielder to walk around past paused people and motionless objects.

Prince Harry risked his life for us all - even Jon Snow

On Thursday night, when the news that Prince Harry had been serving in Afghanistan for 10 weeks leaked, I turned on Channel 4 News, presented by Jon Snow.

Although Snow is someone with a strong, Left-wing political agenda that intrudes too much into his programme, I have always admired him. He is articulate and well-informed and he manages to treat issues thoroughly without making them boring.

But what he said about the Prince Harry story was really shocking. Snow was furious at the media conspiracy (as he saw it) to conceal the fact that the Prince was in the front line.

Using the oldest and falsest royal chestnut, he accused the editors who had made the agreement of seeking knighthoods. He must know that, except for a few restricted orders in the Queen's personal gift, honours come from a system controlled by the Prime Minister.

Conrad Black sentenced to 78 months in jail

Black must report to begin his sentence on March 3. He will be free until then.

He was also fined $125,000. The judge ruled the prosecution had not made its case that the fraud amounted to $32 million US. Instead, she said she would base the sentence on the $6-million US loss that had been estimated in a pre-sentencing report.

The sentence — handed down in a federal court — was at the low end of a sentencing guideline that Judge Amy St. Eve had indicated was appropriate for the former media baron.

Prosecutors had been pressing for a long sentence, of 19 to 24 years. The Montreal-born Black faced a maximum possible sentence of 35 years.

I mean it's still very hard to get these new technology companies going in Australia.

Well it is hard unless you've got a government that is on their side. Now if you've got a government on their side, what you're going to do is provide tax breaks for companies who are pioneering. You're going to provide tax incentives for consumers to use energy from clean areas. That's what's needed.

And number four?

Globalisation. I have a question for you Amanda. Is globalisation a good or a bad thing?

It's a fantastic thing.

You're right, but only if it's done properly.

I agree with you. I think it's a fantastic thing from Australia's point of view as long as we make sure that we don't cut off the poor and...

Oh you've [grasped] it. You've got it absolutely right.

Amid Fight for Control, IAC Reshuffles M&A Unit

Since we announced our intent to spin off our businesses in the fall, we're trying to streamline management because we'll be a smaller company," she said.

The terms of the breakup—and current management's control of the company—is far from clear.

Chief Executive Barry Diller's breakup plan calls for a core IAC, including Ask.com, to remain after the spin-off of the Ticketmaster, HSN home shopping network, LendingTree mortgage, and Interval International vacation timeshare units.

As part of the plan, Mr. Diller proposed to the IAC board that the five companies convert to a single-tier stock structure after the breakup. That move would halve Liberty Media's voting control from its current 62 percent to its 30 percent economic interest.

Liberty's 22.8 percent share of the Class A stock carries one vote per share, but it also owns Class B stock, with 10 votes per share, and preferred stock with two votes per share.

LETTER: Vote for Obama if you care about America

Does the old expression "That's like the pot calling the kettle black" sound a little familiar here? How about " It takes one to know one"? Yeah I know, tired old cliche's.. When it comes to bigotry though, Question might want to examine himself. He doesn't have a problem spewing forth his hate and distain for those he has on his "hit list" of folks he has bigoted feelings toward. That list includes: 1.Conservatives 2.Any Republican, even those who don't care much for George W, Bush whom he calls monkey man, the chimp, simian, dubya, and other assorted pet names. 3.People of faith, especially Christians. 4.The military. Don't you know our soldiers are nothing but murderer's? 5. Cops. A huge majority of them are nothing more than thugs, don't cha know? 5.People who don't agree with his superior opinions bolstered by his superior intellect.
