Ron Paul 2008(R)
Paul objected to and voted against the Iraq War Resolution,[12][13] and continues to oppose U.S. presence in Iraq, charging the government with using the War on Terror to curtail civil liberties. He believes a just declaration of war after the September 11, 2001 attacks would have been against the actual terrorists, al Qaeda, rather than against Iraq, which had no connection to the attacks.[14] When America seeks war, Paul believes Congress must fully approve it with a complete declaration of war, which would allow all resources to be dedicated to victory. However, the original authorization to invade Iraq (Public Law 107-243), passed in late 2002, authorized the president to use military force against Iraq to achieve only the following two specific objectives: "(1) defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and (2) enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq."[15] Accordingly, Paul introduced legislation to add a sunset clause to the original authorization.[16] During the 2003 invasion, he found himself "annoyed by the evangelicals' being so supportive of pre-emptive war, which seems to contradict everything that I was taught as a Christian.
Suffolk Dept. of Social Services owes LIPA $1.3M
Suffolk's Department of Social Services has run up $1.3 million in unpaid utility bills with Long Island Power Authority for power supplied to public assistance clients, with some of the arrears dating back as much as six months. Both LIPA and department officials emphasize that none of the 2,000 recipients - whose bills are paid directly by the county agency - are in danger of being cut off from service. LIPA's top collection official, Arthur Abate, and Thomas DeJesu, LIPA's vice president of intergovernmental relations, will meet with Commissioner Janet DeMarzo next week over the delinquencies. "From time to time, there have been arrears, which are dealt with at the midmanagement level, but this time we thought it prudent to reach out to the commissioner," said Edward Dumas, LIPA's vice president of communications and formerly County Executive Steve Levy's spokesman.
Britney Spears' Driver's-License Case Postponed; Plus Hayden ...
Since Britney Spears isn't in control of her own affairs at the moment, she can't make a plea bargain in her driving-without-a-license case, a Van Nuys, California, judge decided Wednesday (February 20). Spears' attorney for the criminal case told the court that the singer's conservatorship attorneys don't feel she's capable of making an agreement, giving a deposition or signing a declaration at the moment, so Judge T.K. Herman continued the case until March 20. The misdemeanor charge stems from an incident in August in which Spears was videotaped hitting a parked car and leaving the scene without notifying the other driver (the hit-and-run charge was later dropped). Spears was denied visitation rights with her two sons in an unrelated hearing Tuesday. ... Hayden Panettiere must have absorbed someone's musical powers, because the "Heroes" star is putting out a debut album later this year on Hollywood Records.

China considers crashing BHP's takeover party
CHINA Investment Corp (CIP), the country's new sovereign wealth fund, is considering teaming up with major steel producers to counter offer about $US200 billion ($227 billion) for Rio Tinto, according to a weekly newspaper. Rio (rio.ASX:Quote,News) has rejected an all-share offer from rival miner BHP Billiton (bhp.ASX:Quote,News) worth about $US124 billion ($141.06 billion), based on BHP's share price, one of the priciest-ever takeover attempts. Rio Chief Executive Tom Albanese has scheduled media conferences and investor briefings to outline Rio's defence against BHP later on Monday. "The plan now is for Chinese steel makers and CIC to jointly set up a team to join the bidding for Rio," the China Business newspaper reported, citing an unidentified source. CIC, established in September to manage $200 billion of China's $US1.43 trillion ($1.63 trillion) in foreign exchange reserves, would link up with steel makers including Baoshan Iron and Steel (Baosteel), the paper said.
Office romances: Is love a cubicle away?
Plenty of people spend valuable time browsing chat rooms and Web sites in search of love. Visiting a popular night spot is another way singles can meet the perfect mate. Then there's meeting your significant other in the cubicle across from you. It makes sense. Working together often translates into sharing the same interests, and there's ample time to get acquainted during coffee breaks. As a supervisor for a telemarketing company in Tahlequah, Stephanie Lee once dated an employee. "It was a casual relationship," Lee, 29, said. "Co-workers knew we were together, but we didn't go around kissing each other in front of everyone." She said her boyfriend had grown on her over time and that the two had been friends before intensifying their relationship.
